Iphigenia and the Furies (On Taurian Land) unapologetically transforms a myth from the ancient past into a quick-witted, genre-bending theatrical experience, demanding our generation write a new narrative for our times.

Saga Collectif, a collective of Virgilia Griffith, Stephen Jackman-Torkoff, Thomas Olajide, Tawiah M’Carthy, and Jonathan Seinen, came together in 2012 to dig deeply into our theatrical instincts to create work that is bold, honest, and contemporary. We wanted a company where diversity was at the centre of the artistic work and at the heart of the decision-making, determining the ‘vibe’ of our own space to dig deeper into the work. In our collaboration, we are dissecting and dismantling, posing questions to unravel one’s own identity and place in society in a way that is innovative, immediate, and undeniable. Our premiere production, Dora Award-nominated Black Boys, was co-produced with Buddies In Bad Times Theatre in the 2016/2017 season, toured Canada in 2018, and will be published in fall 2021 by Playwrights Canada Press. Next was Saga Collectif’s independently-produced premiere of ‘Iphigenia and the Furies (On Taurian Land)’ which garnered seven Dora Award Nominations in the Independent Category, and will be published by Playwrights Canada Press in the fall of 2021, coinciding with this new production.
Architect Theatre is a theatre and performance company formed in 2008 by Jonathan Seinen and Georgina Beaty. Through our history, we have created research-based plays that engage with the human stories behind contemporary issues. Based in Toronto since 2010, we work with artists from across the country to encourage cross-pollination of creative approaches, foster a national artistic dialogue, and to connect the stories of one community with those of another. We constantly re-invent our methodology so that the form of the play reflects the content at hand, and in this regard we are in the midst of expanding our mandate so that it includes both building original works and renovating classic pieces for the contemporary stage. Our productions include: Highway 63: The Fort Mac Show, a collective creation that combined documentary theatre and scripted fiction to explore the community at the heart of Canada’s oil sands, toured Canada from 2009-2013, and was part of Theatre Passe Muraille’s 2010/2011 season; This Must Be the Place: The CN Tower Show at Theatre Passe Muraille as part of their 2012 Season; Like There’s No Tomorrow, directed by Anita Rochon, was based on first-hand research into the Northern Gateway Pipeline and centred the voice of Gitxsan Nation Hereditary Chef Yvonne Lattie, premiered at SummerWorks in 2015.
Iphigenia and the Furies (On Taurian Land) is an exciting adaptation of the Greek classic that challenges this generation to write a new narrative for our times. Our digital production is a perfect compliment to the Drama, Classical Studies, and Social Science and Humanities high school curriculum as well as post-secondary studies in Theatre and Classics.

We will be speaking with members of Shakespeare in the Ruff’s leadership collective, Patricia Allison and Jeff Yung, about what it’s like leading as a team, the importance of adapting Shakespeare from an intersectional lens, and why artists love retelling stories. Join us for a wide-ranging conversation on the work of updating “the classics” for a contemporary world.
