Aluna Theatre is thrilled to present the SIXTH edition of the RUTAS International Performing Arts Festival from September 26 to October 6, 2024, in partnership with Theatre Passe Muraille and Factory Theatre.
Dreaming a better world that we can build together is the driving force behind the works presenting at RUTAS. The theme for this year’s festival is Personal Cartographies. In these inspiring performances, national and international artists chart their own paths through themes of family, displacement, privilege, women’s labour, and the body as a map of resistance.
In their thought-provoking work, artists from Mexico, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia and Turtle Island ask us: What is the cost behind that which we consume? What do we gain, and what do we lose in our journey to achieve freedom? How do we mark the world that shapes us, and what will happen to our footprints when we are gone?
“A New Musical”
Country music and Queer Crip Love. Freedom and Fetishes. Consent and Accountability. A rebel outlaw bursts out of institutional confines on the prairies to find a new home in the big city. Ken Harrower croons original tunes alongside a live country band revealing his real life story of self-discovery and defiance.
The Flin Flon Cowboy is a new autobiographical musical that chronicles the extraordinary life of Ken Harrower, a gay disabled artist and singer. Set to the sounds of original country music, Ken‘s story begins in the enigmatic town of Flin Flon, Manitoba, and unfolds through his harrowing experiences as a child with a disability in Winnipeg’s foster care system. Defying expectations and refusing to submit to life in an institution, Ken escapes the prairies and embarks on a journey to find connection and belonging in Toronto’s vibrant gay community.
“Live performance in VR.”
This November, Theatre Passe Muraille is excited to once again be the venue partner for Single Thread Theatre’s Performance and XR (PXR) Conference which will bring together artists, technologists, game creators, and academics to discuss digital art creation and innovation.
The first and only conference of its kind in Canada, PXR has grown into a significant platform for showcasing the latest advancements in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality performance. Gathering over four hundred participants from diverse backgrounds across Canada and the globe, including artists, programmers, and industry professionals.
PXR2024 promises to be their most ambitious conference yet, with a hybrid format combining virtual reality and in-person hubs in Vancouver, Toronto, and Kingston. TPM will be the in-person hub for Toronto, loaning and assisting with our VR units for those who wish to attend the conference.
Written by Coleen Shirin MacPherson and developed by Open Heart Surgery Theatre with a star-cast and creative team, Erased draws us into a greeting card factory in a post-climate collapse world, where workers are forced to meet a quota, making ridiculous greeting cards while trying to survive within the machinery that controls and erases them. This tremendous 11 cast member physical theatre piece speaks to our addiction to production in late-capitalism and is a call to look deeper into the state of our planet and the structures that have entrapped us.
A surreal marriage of absurdism, dark comedy, political theatre and poetry, Erased explores how the kindling of a soft revolution turns to flame, igniting the spirit of resistance that keeps it alive.
Award winning author, triathlete, dancer, and Dora Award nominated performer. Vivian Chong shares her world of dating, delving into romances, crushes, rejections, and self growth, as she touches hearts with her tender words. Vivian‘s engaging storytelling is interwoven with her original compositions for a frank, funny and at times unbelievable performance.
Join us on a journey through the stars with The Little Prince, brought to life through the dynamic fusion of physical theatre, Visual Vernacular (VV), American Sign Language (ASL), breathtaking vertical dance, immersive projection design. This reimagined adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s timeless tale transcends spoken language, weaving a visually stunning narrative that speaks directly to the heart. Led by visionary Deaf artist and storyteller Landon Krentz, this performance invites audiences into a world where communication transcends words, and every gesture tells a story. Follow the little prince as he ventures across whimsical planets, meeting inhabitants and uncovering profound lessons about love, belonging, and the human spirit.
A troupe of professional actors finds themselves in a rehearsal hall working on a new play, throwing out idea after idea in an attempt to overcome the creative block bogging them all down. Caught between their dramatic intent and their numerous ethical principles, they discover that their play space has become a minefield where artistic liberty is under threat.
Joe Jack & John borrows the title of Luigi Pirandello’s play Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921), and the broad strokes of the play-within-a-play to investigate the ruptures and reflections of a society moving slowly towards the ideals of equity and inclusion. The resulting unethical comedy doesn’t presume to clear up any confusion, but does promise a laugh – forced, full-bodied, or both!
Joe Jack & John creates engaged and innovative theatrical productions through co-creation with inclusive teams, including professional artists of diverse ability – notably neurodivergent and disabled artists. Joe Jack & John works at the intersection of theatre and life, as though one were the extension of the other; a way to interrogate, rummage through, and above all, to take part.
Come join A Taste of Hong Kong – a snack-sized tasting class of Hong Kong’s best treats! Jackie will introduce you to famous foods such as curry fishballs, siu mai, and more, while sharing the highlights and history of Hong Kong. All the way from its colonial era to the present, this class will demonstrate the grit and jam of Hong Kong people.
...and more
Continuing the history of works in development at Theatre Passe Muraille, the Buzz In-Development Series will host several artists in various stages of development. This season will include artists doing text-based explorations, translation, and digital explorations in VR and AR. We are also pleased to announce that we will be continuing our partnership with Diaspora Dialogues, supporting workshops for Donovan Hayden and Ajahnis Charley.
In addition, our community programming will continue with community meals, panels, and workshops inspired by our season productions, which are free to attend.
TPM continues to support wide-ranging work that addresses current provocations and conversations that are collaborative, community-based, accessible, and innovative. At the heart of how TPM sees its impact ‘beyond the walls,’ the 24.25 includes community engagement and ongoing enhancements to accessibility offerings.
Passe Muraille will announce its second winter/spring 2025 programming phase in December 2024.
