Aluna Theatre is thrilled to present the SEVENTH edition of the RUTAS International Festival of Performance.

RUTAS 2026 will bring an array of national and international performances that invite us to imagine worlds we want to create. From fantastical visual games that activate the imagination to stories that reveal that things are not what they seem to be, this edition of the festival does not shy away from the difficult, the controversial, the magical.

“One man, one camera, a lot of questions…”

Mohammad sits before a camera, answering his questioner’s questions. What begins as a bureaucratic interview spirals into a raw exploration of what it means to be “civilized” in a world that demands you justify your existence. Using live camera, mixed media and his trademark sharp wit, Ahmad Meree delivers a searing and funny examination on citizenship, belonging, and the exhausting performance of assimilation. UNCIVILIZED is a play that explores the journey of leaving home to become a refugee and then a citizen. What is identity? A piece of paper?… we’ll see.

“*****/5. A production of Hamlet that many full companies could envy for its speed, clarity and theatricality…” – The Stage (UK)

Toronto stage and screen veteran Raoul Bhaneja strips Shakespeare‘s most iconic tragedy down to its raw, beating heart — no sets, no costumes, no safety net. Just an actor, the text, and you. Award-winning and internationally acclaimed, Hamlet (solo) directed by Robert Ross Parker (DisgracedMirvish, Apples in WinterHere For Now) has electrified audiences from the Arctic Circle to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. With seventeen characters coursing through a single body, Bhaneja doesn’t just perform Hamlet — he becomes it.

20 years after Hamlet (solo)’s world premiere at Theatre Passe Muraille, these select fundraising performances will support The Andy McKim Endowment Fund for New Works, ensuring the continued growth of artists and the development of new works at Theatre Passe Muraille now and into the future.

Winner of the 2022 Best Actor Award at New York’s United Solo Festival, the world’s largest festival of solo work; winner of the Montreal English Critic’s Circle Award for Best Visiting Production; and nominee for the Calgary Critic’s Award for Best Solo Show, Hamlet (solo) has been performed over 150 times in 25 different cities since its debut in 2006.

“If I were a different person, I could tell you who I really am.”

HEY BIG MIKE! is a wildly theatrical musical memoir that invites audiences to come home for the holidays with award-winning performer, Michael Caldwell. Ever since his mother passed away, Michael and his Vietnam-vet dad barely speak, instead spending their annual Christmas in Pittsburgh watching reruns on tv.

But when the words run out, the singing starts. Michael, backed by the musical genius of Anika Johnson’s original pop score, hosts a kaleidoscopic cabaret of unforgettable characters, each with their own distinct musical style and story to tell.

This poignant production is a powerful examination of what’s left unsaid and the hidden and not-so-quiet rituals we create to cope.

“A dance where digital disconnection becomes human reconnection”

Some conversations can only happen through the body. Fascinated by our (mis)communication affected by the digital age, rising stars Naishi Wang and Lukas Malkowski move through the invisible and unspoken emotions buried deep inside of us — the push and pull, the reaching and withholding, the moments when people are present and the moments they are not. Through a series of intentional attempts they try to communicate via facial expressions, dance, Mandarin, English and ASL, in order to answer the core question: How do we continue when we don’t fully understand each other? The work unfolds as an intimate and honest dance between two bodies searching for understanding within the beautiful imperfection of communication.

“You say things must change, but I ask you: What if they made your identity disappear?”

In Chinatown, a trio of elderly rebels rise to protect their community from extinction. None too pleased with yet another hipster coffee shop gentrifying their neighbourhood, they deal with the invaders the best way they know how: Sabotage! Things take a shocking turn when a certain someone joins forces with the coffee shop to make it more successful.

“Experience the taste of the Woking Phoenix!”

An epic exploration of two decades of a family’s survival. Woking Phoenix tells the story of three siblings, their mother, and their restaurant as they seek to find belonging within small-town Ontario. An intergenerational Chinese love story about creating community and the food that reminds us of home.

After its hit debut at Theatre Passe Muraille in 2023, with sold out audiences and winning the Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award at the Dora Awards, this hilarious and touching play, Woking Phoenix travels on tour to Richmond, BC, and Sudbury, ON.

...and more

Continuing the history of works in development at Theatre Passe Muraille, the Buzz In-Development Series will host several artists in various stages of development.

In addition, our community programming will continue with community meals, panels, and workshops inspired by our season productions, which are free to attend.
