A Note from Theatre Passe Muraille
Welcome to Theatre Passe Muraille and Erased written and directed by Coleen Shirin MacPherson, a partnership with Open Heart Surgery Theatre.
With diverse inspirations, Coleen has envisioned an apocalyptic world mired in capitalistic delusion and the humans struggling amidst it. Set in a greeting card factory, we meet the workers while the unknown fates of those who might have once resisted permeate the space.
The physical building of 16 Ryerson ironically returns to play the role of a factory (after it was a bakery!). The metaphor of the artful greeting cards gives us pause to reflect. A card can be a balm, an affirmation, and an expression of empathy and art just like theatre can. At the same time, the cracks of a societal breakdown continue. So, perhaps the question for the characters of the play and for ourselves is, what are we going to do about it?
In this haunting yet thought-provoking piece, Coleen MacPherson challenges us to confront the deeper forces shaping our existence—forces that, if ignored, may render us erased from history altogether. As you watch, ask yourself: What is our responsibility in this collapsing world, and what role can we play in shaping a future that is more humane, more just, and more aware?
– Indrit, Marjorie, Michelle
A Note From Open Heart Surgery Theatre
Erased began out of a desire to speak about capitalism, our culture of consumption and to write something funny. And while writing in the forests of France, where snakes were living in the walls of my cottage, the work evolved into a strange world of the future. We first shared the play in London, UK with a reading at the Arcola Theatre in 2017 and then at the Tristan Bates Theatre in the West End in 2018. From here, the play grew with workshops in Toronto, and in 2020, a few months after the global pandemic struck us all, the piece was transformed into a film-play that was broadcast live through La MaMa Experiments in New York City. This play is iterative and ever-evolving and many artists have helped shape the work. Erased has been developed at Tarragon Workspace, and took part in two Buzz Development series at Theatre Passe Muraille in 2021 and 2023.
This work has been developed by the generous contributions of the following artists and organizations: Ericka Leobrera, Susanna Fournier, Mina James, Denise Stephenson, Angela Bull, Kate Handford, Richard Hansell, Kwaku Okyere, Sturla Alsvåg, Michael Ayres, Yaël Haskell, Kaitlin Hickey, Philippa Domville, Miranda Calderon, Valois Mickens, Yago Mesquita, Rosamund Small, David Jansen, Keira Loughran, Marcello Magni, Georgina Beatty, Jason Trucco, Guy Livneh, The Arcola Theatre (UK), Theatre Gargantua (OAC recommender) and York University.
The Chorus of the Disappeared was developed in April 2023 with York University Devised Theatre students who took part in an internship with Open Heart Surgery Theatre. Our student interns included: Dylan Carter, Zoe Magirias, Priscila Gonzalez, Makenah Welsh, Eden Ulnik, Madeline Sadai, Julie Yiptong, Payton Oswald, Mackenzie Mamone and Julia Usher.
Note from the Director/Playwright
At the heart of Erased is the desire for another world; for collective liberation that is
possible if only we can all imagine it, together. We live in a precarious time, where even
amidst climate catastrophe our system perpetuates productivity over healing; extraction over repair. Over and over again people rise up to speak to the atrocities happening all over the world, to fight for the disenfranchised, yet our systems continue to churn its machinery of violence. True liberation is only possible, when we all are free. I believe the great unravelling is happening, but change is slow, emergent, and requires
immense faith.
Working with so many people over time on this show has made me realize more and more that theatre really is a collaborative artform and that nothing can be done in solitude. We worked in a collaborative way in the room, in order to mimic the kind of possible future the play was asking for. Working on a show with 11 performers has been truly a gift, and to have this many bodies on the TPM stage makes my heart race. I am indebted to all the artists that have made this play possible. From time spent exploring movement as a way of telling another layer of the story with Alix Sideris; to Nick Blais steering us into an industrial world full of portals with his set and lighting design; and Jung A Im creating costumes with magic and transformation in mind; Amy Nostbakken’s vocals and original music transports us, while Richard Feren’s precise sound design immerses us into the sonic world of the play. It has been a gift to work with each artist, and each performer who has dipped their toes into the play along the way and made it all the richer. Erased, over the years, has become more complex and exciting and less and less “mine”. It is more a piece that I feel everyone has made because it takes all of us to make it.
That’s exciting.
And now. All I will say is, welcome to the absurd world of Erased, breathe, feel the heat.
And. Let’s take a moment, together.
– Coleen Shirin MacPherson, Director/Playwright
