Note from Theatre Passe Muraille

Among a season of returning acclaimed artists, including Leslie Ting (WHAT BRINGS YOU IN), Luke Reece (AS I MUST LIVE IT), Tiziano Cruz (WAYQEYCUNA) and upcoming in May, Chisato Minamimura (MARK OF A WOMAN), perhaps none other than Anusree Roy has the longest relationship with Theatre Passe Muraille. With her playwriting debut PYAASA in 2007, Anusree’s daring and bold voice burst onto the theatrical landscape, with many more plays to follow, challenging societal perceptions of women, class, and her home country of India.
In THROUGH THE EYES OF GOD, Anusree revisits the character of Chaya who first appeared in her playwriting debut PYAASA. Far from the child we meet in that seminal play, Chaya has grown up and has a child of her own. But her world has not become any less cruel. Anusree’s plays are about survival and resiliency. And in particular, this new play is about love – the love for a child. And to what lengths will a parent go in order to protect her child? And how far is too far?
Anusree asks these complex questions through the clarity of a solo play offering us characters in sharp relief, with honesty and without apologies. With immense humanity, Anusree’s text gives space for Gabriella Sundar Singh’s virtuosic performance, under the directorial guidance of Thomas Morgan Jones (also the original director of Anusree’s previous solo works which both premiered in the Backspace.)
When Anusree approached me with her new play, there was never any question of where it would be staged. In the style of her previous one-woman hits at TPM, it was only natural for the Backspace stage to hold the immensity and heart of her storytelling.
Welcome back Anusree.
And welcome to the world of Anusree Roy.
– Marjorie Chan, Artistic Director of Theatre Passe Muraille
