Note from the Producing Companies

We are thrilled to welcome audiences to BUTCH/FEMME, written and directed by Emily Paterson, an incredible emerging artist. I had the privilege of adjudicating the Hart House Drama Festival, which showcases University of Toronto student works. One play, BUTCH/FEMME, stood out. Emily’s writing captures realistic, challenging dialogue, while her direction shows a maturity of restraint, creating an intense, tender atmosphere. It was affirming to see many Queer students assert themselves through their art, and Emily’s confident, delicate work impressed me, earning her the President’s Award for Outstanding Production at the festival.

Before the festival, I had told TPM’s Artistic Producer and Associate Artistic Director to leave space for an exceptional student production and we were excited to invite Emily to launch TPM’s 2025-2026 Season. TPM, through our BUZZ Program supported a script workshop with veteran artist Moynan King, offering guidance for a new generation.

Theatre Passe Muraille

The Green Couch Theatre Company is proud to present BUTCH/FEMME as its debut production. Written by executive producer Emily Paterson, this piece establishes the mission of our emerging company, to platform the work of up-coming Canadian, female artists. We are honoured to have the opportunity to establish ourselves through this production at Theatre Passe Muraille and hope you enjoy the show as much as we do.

The Green Couch Theatre Company

Note from the Playwright

BUTCH/FEMME emerged as a work sought on exploring the real history of lesbian stories in Toronto, and beyond. Sapphic narratives, cultures, and spaces have always been misunderstood and underrepresented in the mainstream, which is why my aim with BUTCH/FEMME was not only to draw attention to our stories, but to generate a space for sapphics to connect and feel understood by a piece of art. Inspired by the real Toronto bar “The Continental” BUTCH/FEMME is dedicated to all the butches, femmes, and anyone in between both in the present, past and future. I am incredibly grateful to Marjorie Chan, and the Theatre Passe Muraille team for believing in this work. Thank you for trusting me to produce BUTCH/FEMME as part of your season. I would also like to thank Salma Wennekers for her commitment to this project from its conception in our second year playwriting class, to its first staging at the Hart House Drama Festival, and now with this presentation at TPM. Thank you to Annabelle and Tessa for the joy, care, and dedication with which you have approached bringing this work and these characters to life. And as always, thank you to my family and friends for your continuous belief, support, and love for my artistic practice. And to the audience, thank you for supporting this work, I hope you find a piece of yourself in Jenny and Al’s story.

Tessa Kramer is a second-year student at the University of Toronto, pursuing a double major in Dramatic Arts and Socio-Cultural Anthropology. A passionate writer and actor, Tessa is deeply interested in the intersections of social justice, performance, and culture. Outside of her academic and artistic work, Tessa enjoys sewing and upcycling clothing, caring for her turtle, and diving into books on topics such as history, philosophy, and linguistics. Having been involved in drama since grade school, Tessa is thrilled to be making her professional theatre debut in this production. She is excited to bring the character of Alice to life and share that work with you. Thank you for being here and hope you enjoy the show.

Annabelle Gillis has been a performer for as long as she can remember. Her theatrical credits include Twelfth Night (Olivia), The Seagull (Paulina), Jack and the Beanstalk (Evil Witch/Chef), Grease (Pink Lady), among others performed both in english and in french. She is also a bold improvisational theatre performer featured in shows such as Beer Beer Comedy and Triple-En-Genre at the Social Capital Theatre, as well as being an executive member of the University of Toronto’s Varsity Improv Team. Her talents extend beyond the stage: She thrives on camera acting in short films, local commercials and modelling for both print and runway. Known for her emotionally resonant and daring performances, she continues to captivate audiences through every role. Annabelle is thrilled to reprise her role as Jenny in Butch/Femme for Theatre Passe Muraille’s 2025/2026 season.

Thank you to my family and my two black cats Adriel and Brownie for letting me go be in this production.
