Organization Description

Theatre Passe Muraille is known for developing innovative and daring Canadian theatre, but we exist to support our communities. From encouraging independent and emerging artists, and multicultural work, to inspiring our staff and artists to work collaboratively, Theatre Passe Muraille works to ensure all voices are represented on our stage.

Typically, Theatre Passe Muraille produces and/or presents 6-8 shows a year and hosts rental companies and festivals throughout the year. Theatre Passe Muraille operates 2 performance spaces – a Mainspace Theatre (160 seats), and Backspace Theatre (45 seats).

This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate passionate about Canadian theatre and the importance of developing and producing new alternative plays that articulate a distinct Canadian voice and reflect the complexity of our intercultural society. The position offers the candidate the chance to engage and inspire a broad array of philanthropic supporters in furthering TPM’s mission to break down walls by pushing against boundaries.  

Job Description

The Development Manager leads and executes the private funding goals at TPM as well as supports the Leadership Team with public sector funding applications. Reporting to TPM’s Leadership Team (Artistic Director and Artistic Producer), the Development Manager will oversee the development and  implementation of the company’s fundraising plan and lead efforts to engage individual, foundation and corporate supporters with the company’s work and demonstrate TPM’s valuable impact on the community. They will be responsible for the execution of fundraising plans and timelines per TPM’s Strategic Fundraising Plan, organize the efforts of the senior team to help cultivate and steward supporters, and direct the work of the Development Coordinator. 

Main responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the lead strategist for the identification, cultivation, and stewardship of new corporate sponsors and high-level donors, ensuring sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Personally managing an assigned portfolio of individual, corporate and foundation accounts to lead;
  • Creating engaging and targeted proposals for individual and corporate support,

Other responsibilities include:

  • Manage the Development Coordinator who is responsible for  and creating broad-based direct response campaign appeals to reach a wide range of potential and current donors;
  • Manage the Actively building and managing a pipeline for new individual, corporate and foundation support against mutually set goals for both revenue and cultivation activity, including researching potential supporters whose philanthropic goals align with TPM’s mandate;
  • Overseeing the use of the database to track all supporter and prospect activity, allowing for efficient reporting on fundraising progress to staff and board and capturing an individual understanding of donor preferences and passions;
  • Managing donor and supporter stewardship activity to ensure established reporting, recognition and receipting standards are met;
  • Creating effective impact reports to demonstrate the results of key supporters involvement;
  • Effectively representing TPM at supporter meetings and presentations, and at artistic performances and donor events.

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of experience in fundraising;
  • Understanding of TPM’s Mandate, Mission and Values;
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in developing and implementing fundraising strategies;
  • Confident communicator with strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines while maintaining focus on fundraising goals;
  • Strong demonstrated initiative with the ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment;
  • Proficiency in the use of computer for: Fundraising management software, Word processing, Databases, Spreadsheets is a necessity;
  • Occasional Weeknights and weekend work will be necessary. 

Assets

  • An experienced understanding of Major Gift fundraising and the strategies behind a strong Moves Management practice;
  • Experience supervising staff; 
  • External orientation to the profession of fundraising, with a keen interest in sector best practices and an up-to-date date understanding of any relevant affecting charities;
  • Experience in a dynamic, events-based environment and an understanding of how to leverage organizational events to help meet fundraising goals;
  • Knowledge of any graphic design software, InDesign or Canva for example;
  • Experience with any or all of the following will be an asset: not-for-profit company, Toronto Theatre, arts councils.

We’re looking for volunteers interested in joining our Board of Directors. We seek people who love the work of our theatre along with our commitment to develop innovative Canadian theatre that is inclusive, eclectic, and representative of our city.

The Board’s main responsibilities include supporting the executive and artistic leadership in an advisory capacity, fundraising on behalf of the theatre, providing legal and financial oversight of the organization, engaging with local communities, supporting equity and inclusion in the theatre, and promoting the theatre and enhancing its public standing.

You will also be responsible for attending regularly scheduled board meetings (about 6 per year, which are generally held at the Theatre Passe Muraille offices), and to sit on at least one committee according to your interest and skill set. Board members are encouraged to participate in fundraising activities.

At this time, we are seeking applications from people with experience in the following areas: 

Accessibility, Law; Community Development; Fundraising or Philanthropy; Accounting; Engineering or Architecture; Government Relations; Non-Profit, Artists, and those who live or work in Theatre Passe Murailles’ neighbourhood. However, we are always looking for committed and active champions of our theatre and encourage those with experience in other areas to apply as well.

In addition to general board members, we are also seeking applications for the roles of Treasurer of the Board.

Above all, we want our Board to fully reflect the people who live, work, play and study in our neighborhoods and communities.
